SIBO Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth – Natural Treatment

stomach and intestines outline viewSIBO is short for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth.  SIBO is defined as a condition in which large numbers of bacteria are present in the small intestine and where the types of bacteria present should be restricted to the large intestine or colon.  Some common symptoms of SIBO are chronic gas and bloating, diarrhea or constipation, undigested particles of food in the stool, and possibly GERD (esophageal reflux with belching).  Lab tests should be used to confirm the diagnosis.

Why does SIBO occur?

Sometimes SIBO can be caused by low stomach acid.  Stomach acid is actually protective against bacterial invasion.  In addition, certain people are more predisposed to the development of SIBO because of certain risk factors. These factors can be summarized into the following groups:

  1. Poor or irregular motility of the small intestine or structural changes that lead to stasis,
  2. Immune system impairment,
  3. A variety of digestive conditions that allow bacteria from the large intestine to enter the small bowel.

Regardless of the cause, acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment is very effective for reversing SIBO and repairing the digestive system.
