Neck Pain and Stiffness
Dry needling therapy provides rapid and effective relief for neck pain and stiffness. Neck and shoulder muscle tension often occur together and both are common concerns at our clinic. This condition is especially problematic for people who work many hours at a computer. Excessive sitting for long periods of time can lead to a lack of circulation and poor posture in the neck and upper back muscles (trapezius muscle). Neck stiffness can be also aggravated by some movements and may be due to a misalignment of the neck vertebrae (cervical vertebrae). For all of these symptoms, the resulting painful condition can also be effectively treated with acupuncture.
As a result of poor posture and excessive seated work, tightness at the neck can cause various symptoms such as chronic headaches, poor concentration, or fatigue.
The most common causes of neck pain are:
- Prolonged neck strain due to poor posture,
- Cervical misalignment, and
- Emotional stress.
How does dry needling treat neck pain?
The treatment approach with dry needling looks for the common muscle problems that lead to neck pain. After a thorough evaluation, local neck and shoulder trigger points may be stimulated to allow the surrounding muscles to relax into a normal relaxed state. Other muscles lacking tone are stimulated to correctly balance the delicate neck anatomy. Cupping therapy may also used to increase local tissue circulation and to induce an additional relaxation response.
