Digestive Health with Acupuncture

digestive system outline viewIn Traditional Chinese thinking, good digestion is the central aspect of health.  Eating and digesting well is the basis for all body functions and daily social interactions. The Chinese greeting, “Chi fan le ma?” translates as “Have you eaten (rice) today?”.  It is commonly assumed, but rarely acknowledged that good digestion is the basis for feeling good and thinking clearly.  Strong digestion enables a sense of optimism and mental clarity.  Other positive attributes stemming from strong digestion may include: feelings of strength, contentment, and good social connections with others.  In contrast, weakened digestion may cause various problems including bloating, fatigue, acid reflux, cramping, irritability and depression.  These symptoms may also be signs of blood sugar dysregulation.

The source of health is in the digestive organs, which include the Stomach, Spleen, Pancreas and Small Intestine. This organ network is responsible for the processing of food and nutrients that form the foundation for body structures and fluids.  When functions of digestion are blocked by too much food, or weakened by poor nutrition, the rhythmic cycles of the intestines become less efficient. This decline leads to poor transformation, reduced absorption, excess gas, and the stagnation of foods.
Indulging cravings, as well as eating too quickly or too much, brings a fleeting feeling of relief and then later a persistent feeling of discontent.  In contrast, satisfying true hunger with clean food produces deep feelings of pleasure, affirming the soundness of the body’s instinctual intelligence.
