Myofascial Trigger Point Acupuncture

Trigger Point Map on Back and Neck with red dots showing areas with trigger pointsAt Meridian Health Clinic in Santa Monica, we use Dry Needling and Myofascial Trigger Point Acupuncture (MTPA) and to give patients fast results and effective treatments for muscular pain.  Trigger Point Acupuncture is a modern approach to acupuncture that incorporates a Western physical medicine model as described by Janet Travell, MD.

MTPA treatments begin with a complete structural evaluation followed by local trigger point assessment.  This evaluation involves palpation of various muscle structures for myofascial tension and trigger points.  These areas of tension are felt as muscle “knots”, generalized tension and/or tender points.  After areas of muscle tension are identified accurately they can then be released with local Trigger Point treatment.

Trigger Point Acupuncture can very effective for treating the complex and long-standing muscular disorders that often have no good solutions in modern medicine. Suitable conditions for MTPA treatment include:

muscular pain, muscular tension, muscular spasm, muscle knots, deep myofacial pain, radiating pain, chronic headaches, chronic pain syndrome.  Additionally, MTPA has also proven an effective aid in the psychological treatment of post-traumatic disorders.

MTPA originates from Western physical anatomy, as described by Janet Travell, M.D. in her various texts on the topic.  In developing her trigger point approach, Dr. Travell looked to find myofascial constrictions at the root of each patient’s pain and dysfunction.

At Meridian Health Clinic in Santa Monica, we use Trigger Point Acupuncture (MTPA) to give our patients fast results and directed local treatments.
