Neck Pain, Stiffness and Shoulder Pain
Acupuncture is an effective solution for quickly resolving neck and shoulder pain and/or stiffness. Neck and shoulder muscle tension is a very common concern – especially of people who work many hours at a computer. Excessive sitting for long periods of time lead to a lack of circulation in the neck and upper back muscles (trapezius muscle). Neck stiffness can be also aggravated by some movements. For all of these symptoms, the resulting painful condition can also be effectively treated with acupuncture.
As a result of poor posture and excessive desk work, tightness at the shoulder & neck can cause various symptoms such as chronic headaches, decreased concentration, or irritability. The large muscle between the neck and the shoulder joint called the upper trapezius; this muscle is especially well treated with acupuncture. Some psychologists have shown that that the amount of muscle tension in the upper trapezius mirrors the emotional state of a person and consequently relaxing this muscle is helpful for relaxing the whole nervous system.
How does acupuncture treat neck and shoulder pain?
As explained above, most common neck and shoulder stiffness results from two factors: prolonged mechanical strain and emotional stress. The treatment approach with acupuncture should consider both aspects. With acupuncture the change is started by release stress and balancing the nervous system. After the nervous system activity is reduced, local neck and shoulder trigger points can be stimulated to allow the whole muscle belly to relax into a more restful state. Moxibustion (heat therapy) treatment may also applied to certain acupuncture points to increase local tissue circulation and to induce an additional relaxation response.
