Whiplash Injury & Neck Sprain Strain – Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture is very helpful in providing immediate and lasting relief of shoulder and neck pain.  Neck and shoulder pain can occur immediately following a whiplash injury and in such cases, acupuncture treatment should begin as quickly as possible.  The neck injury resulting from whiplash can be very limiting and painful and may persist for a long duration if not properly addressed.  Whiplash symptoms may occur immediately or some hours after the initial injury. In general, the sooner after the incident that symptoms develop the greater chance of serious damage to neck and shoulder structures.  Symptoms include:

  •     Neck pain
  •     Neck swelling
  •     Tenderness along the back or sides of your neck
  •     Muscle spasms (in the side or back of your neck)
  •     Difficulty moving head and neck
  •     Headaches
  •     Pain shooting from your neck into either shoulder or arm

Whiplash may prevent you from carrying out simple day-to-day tasks such as driving, sitting at a desk  and doing the basic house work.  In order to find relief for whiplash injury symptoms as soon as possible, acupuncture can be used to reduce pain and quicken the healing process.

In a randomized, controlled study involving 125 patients between the ages of 18 and 65 years, with chronic (85%) or sub-acute whiplash-associated disorder (grade I or II), treatment with acupuncture (12 treatments over the course of 6 weeks) was found to be associated with significantly greater reduction in pain intensity at 3 and 6 months follow-up, as compared to subjects who received a simulated but not real acupuncture treatment. The authors conclude, “Real acupuncture was associated with a significant reduction in pain intensity over at least 6 months.”
